Text books for track B

We had narrowed down to two options: weiling Wu’s books and 華語通
 
華語通so far has published volume 1 and 2 only.  In the summer they may publish to volume 4.  We are not sure yet.  華語通has another version for A track students: 生活華語 We can get this 生活華語version for free.  But 華語通is NOT FREE.
 
we have 生活華語at school.  You may need to take a look asap.

    I suggest Weiling Wu’s books for B track students. I know the books are not free, but the context design is more thorough and organized. The accompanying Teacher’s Guide can streamline the teaching activities.

    As I said at the faculty meeting, we need to make a decion about b track textbooks asap. I start to wonder with the existing textbooks, how far can they take our b track stuents to?

    when B track teachers have the meeting, I think both me and Tommy should be there as well.

    Following is the message that I got from the author of Huayu Tong earlier this month.

    今年九月貴校使用華語通第三四冊無問題。
    > 華語通每冊七課,進度較慢且增加情境對話,適用B班(雙語班)。華語通預計
    > 編至第六冊(約等於生活華語第五冊第六課),
    > 然後跳過較難的生活華語第六冊,銜接至生活華語第七冊(漫畫卡通對話為主)。
    > 請問這樣的規劃貴校的意見為何?
    > 請問貴校目前每年華語通課本需求量為何?
    > B班的學生數量是否在成長中?
    > 目前僑委會免費供應生活華語,
    > 但華語通尚未供應,必須由本社經民間管道提供。

    2.華語通第六冊結束,約電腦筆寫800生字,手寫200字。約八十基本句型。

    3.生活華語第七八冊為卡通影片漫畫,屬綜合性複習但特別強化語音與句型,因此跳過較難的生活華語第六冊(文章與複句),按理銜接問題不大,評估中。

    4.華語通一至六冊,銜接生活華語七至十二冊,全套仍為十二冊。

    At ACS meetings, I stopped by the booth of Far eastern publishing house which will publish books for Wu Weiling. I was told that their advanced level is only available to volume three.

    I have discussed with some B track teachers and consulted with their opnion, we all agree that it may not suit our students’ best interests.

    I think we should just go ahead to use Huayu tong華語通and eventually connect to Living Mandarin(生活華語).Our school has several copies of Living Mandarin. Please take a look of these books in the summer for your planning. I will discuss with Pam Chang about which level for which class soon.

    If you have any questions, please me know asap before my trip. I plan to order books there and have them ship to us asap. I will bring some books for teachers with me so that you can plan your syllabi in the summer.

    I will post this message to wiki per Tommy’s request. I suggest you do the same, please.

    因此本來華語通第4冊在一個月前就要付印,但是我做了一個重要的決定,
    改版華語通第1冊與第4冊,解決句型語法教學的問題,以致時間有所延遲,

    今日新版華語通第1冊課本已經印製出來,Sonia已經用最快的速度DHL快遞給貴校。第4冊新版接續完成,將再次用DHL快遞給貴校,連同第1冊的習作。
    相關音樂CD與電腦光碟後續製作中,目前均寄送生活華語光碟暫時替代使用。

    新版華語通第1冊的教學若能成功,將可因應簡化字的挑戰,
    我寄望甚深,能否麻煩紀錄與告知貴校老師教學的效果。謝謝。
    很遺憾上回在台北無法與負責B Track的張麗英老師碰面,
    也許下回再碰面了。

    華語通第一冊 EPen光碟經老師和本校副校長測試後,發現無法使用,副校長本身在microsoft工作 他猜測是電腦軟體太舊。可否有補救方式?

    第一冊習作已收到了,非常謝謝您幫忙。本校由於已經開學,所以不便更改使用新版第一冊,但是將於明年開始使用,我大致看過內容,覺得比舊版更好,應該會對學生有幫助。

    去年年底僑務委員會議與校長代表回國,不分藍綠強烈建議僑委會供應華語通給中文學校,以免學生流失。
    貴校走在全球中文學校的最前面。
    根據與僑委會討論的結果,華語通正式更名為「生活華語正簡版」,課數與正體字版相同。僑委會已經正式將正簡版1-4冊列入選書清單,不知你看到沒?未來貴校使用正簡版將可由僑委會免費供應了。生活華語正體字版前三冊也出第二版,加入英文與語法句型全圖練習等。
    正簡版第三冊有一半以上(六課)是原華語通第四冊的內容,已經正式印出。貴校5B若要使用,麻煩告知。
    另外,K1-3也已經列入選書清單,清單內目前只列課本,貴校若用K1-3,可加列「K1-3音樂CD與習作」。

    經由近三年的溝通與努力,正簡版已經確認為新的政策方向,
    生活華語正簡版第一批1-4冊於二月底出版完畢,已列入僑委會清單,因此不必擔心銜接的問題。
    第二批5-7冊跟進完成。貴校即將收到的正簡版第三冊可以教五課,下月接獲的正簡版第4冊可以預備做為銜接,

    另往下銜接到K1-3(含主課本、活動課本與CD),B Track零程度學生,可由K1-3開始銜接到正簡版第1冊。

    In 3B class we use both 華語通 [E-pen] Level 3 and IQchinese’s Pinyin and Go100.

    Comments on 華語通 [E-pen] Level 3: There are two problems I see with this material. One is that the CD from 生活華語 does not correlate with the lessons from 華語通. So the class doesn’t have any ready made CD or other audio support to go with this material. The other is that I sense that 華語通 simply has more English explanations and translations than 生活華語, but it is not exactly written with the B-track students in mind. There are many exercises in Workbook B that are simply beyond the ability of my students.

    To tie up the loose ends among our students (who have all come from different teachers and different tracks in the past) I have been using IQchinese Pinyin and Go100 as supplementary material for the class. I see great progress in pinyin and in character recognition. I am now also starting to get my students to recite from memory the main text (chants) of each lesson. Hopefully this will also get them to increase their listening comprehension and verbal response.

    IQchinese’s Reader 3.5 is not a recommended product for teacher or student. Sometimes the pronunciation is not accurate.

    IQchinese’s Quiz is good. I can see it being a good medium for a teacher to setup exercises for character recognition and pinyin typing. As a teacher I can setup a Quiz with vocabulary from 華語通 [E-pen]or from any source text.

    If IQchinese were to become standard supplementary material for the B-track (a move that I can really recommend) I would like to see the school to be able to lock in on a sale price for the IQchinese products. However much I like Go100, it is not worth their standard published price on their website.

    華語通第四冊剩餘的兩課,將於二月份出版在「正簡版第四冊」的第一與二課(全書約有90頁),屆時仍寄送給貴校。
    正簡版比華語通的設計更活潑,更接近第二語言教學。原貴校訂的華語通第四冊(74頁)將寄送兩本正簡版(3.4冊合計約186頁代替)

    In my opinion, use IQ Chinese Go 100 starting from 3rd grade is an excellent idea. However, I suggest it should be used as supplementary material.
    To my memory, according to the decision of faculty meeting, we decided to teach Zhuyin for both A and B tracks, and blend in Pinyin later. The decision is made based on the resaerch that teaching Pinyin for 3rd grade and below will confuse their English Phonic learning. Besides, Zhuyin symbol is the best introduction for learing complicate Chinese characters because students can learn some basic strokes and the concept of stroke order. I also remember some reseraches show that Zhuyin are easier for second language learners to learn the correct pronunciation.
    I used to teach some young non-heritage students (Pre-K and K), they also demonstrated pretty good progress.
    I personally think 生活華語 already have a lot to teach. We should take into account of the curriculum design for vertical alignment before we choose IQ Chines or 生活華語 as our textbook.

    我知道IQ Chinese 是很好的教材。學習這套教材的學生,漢語拼音的基礎很過硬。因為這套教材強調“聽、說、讀、打”,學生練習和作業都要用拼音打字,過程中有任何差錯程序都不允許通過,這樣經常不斷地反復練習,學生自然就很全面地掌握了漢語拼音及其使用方法。這套教材很適合非中文家庭背景的學生。對學生學習認讀漢字,掌握四聲,正確發音,及練習漢語句型(每課的生字都圍繞一定的句型展開)很有幫助。IQ Chinese 每冊十課,每課120個生字,每個生字在不同的環境中反復出現二十次以上(28次?),學生學過之后記得比較牢。不過因教材著重“打”(認讀),而不是“寫”,想學“寫”的同學自己可以練習抄寫打過的生字,但如有筆畫順序的問題,則需另行解決。

    鑒于6B (下學年7B?)的大部分學生基礎都不是很扎實,如果下學年開始改用IQ Chinese作教材,我個人的看法,為照顧大部分學生,就從Go 200 開始為好。像勞甫這樣的學生可能很快就會吃不飽,需要給他添加另外的內容。但做練習等等并不會有影響。

    我的問題是:如果改用IQ Chinese 作教材,學生和教師的電腦都要自備嗎?學校能提供投影機嗎?

    1) Last year I was using 華語通Book 3 to teach my 3B class and used Go100 as a supplementary material. I will tell you that it is not easy to be doing two different tracks. I preferred just using Go100, especially since we could start from the base. With 華語通we skipped Book 1 and Book 2 and started on Book 3. That made the transition not so smooth. Anyway, at the end of 3B, we finished 9 out of 10 lessons in Go100 and we finished 4 out of 7 lessons in 華語通 Book 3.

    2) I would agree with starting Go100 in 3B class. I would prefer to use the Go series for vertical alignment and use the 華語通 or 生活華語 as supplementary material. But I really think that supplementary material is not necessary.

    3) This year my class (4B) is doing 生活華語 Book 3.. We’ve done lessons 3-9. We have also done Go200 lesson 1 in September. I am very happy that the school is considering the IQchinese Go series for the B-track. I am 100% in support of that move.

    4) What to do with PreK-B through 2B? I prefer these years to be filled with conversations, songs, chants, games, and recognition of some basic characters. In fact, they can transition into Go100 by just memorize the chants without learning or typing pinyin. I would not teach zhu-in as I think that it takes up too much time and is not useful to the B-track students in the long run. Zhu-in is useful for the A-track students because the A-track students has a much verbal vocabulary than what they can read/write. So having Zhu-in allows them to read a wider text than they are normally capable of. The B-track students don’t really have any vocabulary to begin with. Even if they know Zhu-in, they still can’t read or understand any text.

    5) By the way, my students have been typing pinyin on the computer for two years now. They are comfortable with typing in pinyin and picking out the correct characters.

    6) Pinyin and Go100 can be taught in the same year. We did that last year in 3B.

    7) My students and I bought Go100 through 400 for $12/CD. It was a special IQchinese Zhuin version promotion. I would recommend that the school NOT buy that version. It contained only the traditional text, and it’s impossible to type in zhu-in. The regular Go100-800 CD’s have only Pinyin input, and one can do either traditional or simplified text.

    I’ll try not to multi-task during a conference call next time.

    But I still think in this time we can let child learn Zhu-yin(don’t need to serious and teach too much,just let child play & recognize the cymbal),The reason is —

    3.This year I transfer zhu-yin to pin-yin,not so difficult,And if we have Go series,this will more easily.

    4.The regular Go100-800 CD’s have only Pinyin input, and one can do either traditional or simplified text.—I agree buy this one.
    5.Pronunciation is for read out and type it,pin-yin is more easy for non-heritage child.

    6.In collage,don’t they just use pin-yin?
